Not sure what counts as 2D or 3D, how raised effects really work, or what “overprintable transfer foil” actually means? Digital embellishment opens up new creative territory, but it also introduces terms that may be unfamiliar, especially if you're used to conventional print. This glossary is here to help. Here, we explain key terms in clear, practical language — so you can design with clarity and confidence.
An umbrella term for digitally applied decorative effects — including flat metallic foiling and raised clear varnish coatings. Unlike conventional methods, digital embellishment requires no dies or plates and allows for on-demand, variable designs. It encompasses two core techniques: digital metallization (2D) and digital spot varnishing (3D).
The digital application of metallic transfer foil in a flat, non-textured layer. This technique creates a high-gloss metallic effect without embossing or raised structures.
KURZ offers two technologies:
This method enables precise transfer foil placement, fast changeovers, and often supports overprinting for metallic color variations.
A digital inkjet process, referred to 3D inkjet technology, that builds up clear, tactile effects by applying UV-curable varnish with variable thickness. The result is a relief-like texture that can be glossy, matte, or combined with transfer foil to add depth, dimension, and haptic contrast to printed materials. While digital metallization can be added, the defining feature is the height and texture created by the varnish itself.
Our system-matched DIGITAL METAL® transfer foil can be CMYK overprinted precisely for metallic vibrancy. This allows designers to create a wide range of metallic colors through overprinting. It reduces transfer foil inventory complexity and supports consistent branding across product lines. Commonly used in applications where flexibility and custom color matching are important.
A process that enables one-to-one variations in metallization or varnish effects, based on data. Each printed item can carry unique elements, like names, serial numbers, product SKUs, or location-specific designs, and still be decorated with transfer foil or spot coating. Since everything is digitally controlled, variable embellishment doesn’t require setup changes or new tooling. It’s widely used in premium packaging, promotional campaigns, and limited editions.
